Combining These Two Simple Metrics Could Improve Your Heart Health

Many people use smartwatches to track their cardiovascular health, often by monitoring metrics like step count or average heart rate.

Researchers, however, are now introducing an enhanced metric that combines both of these factors. This metric involves dividing the average daily resting heart rate by the daily average number of steps taken, producing a ratio called the daily heart rate per step (DHRPS).

The study found that individuals with a less efficient heart, as indicated by a higher DHRPS, were more likely to develop a range of health issues, including Type II diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, stroke, coronary atherosclerosis, and myocardial infarction. In other words, the ratio can be a useful early warning sign of cardiovascular risk.

The DHRPS metric essentially measures inefficiency in heart function, offering a snapshot of how well the heart is performing relative to the amount of physical activity a person engages in throughout the day.

Researchers emphasized that the metric is based on simple calculations—requiring just basic math to divide the average resting heart rate by the average number of steps. This makes it an accessible tool for people wanting to monitor their health.

The study's credibility is bolstered by its large sample size, which included data from nearly 7000 smartwatch users.

These data were compared to participants' electronic medical records, providing a robust set of findings. The researchers demonstrated that those with a higher DHRPS ratio were more likely to face cardiovascular issues. Moreover, the DHRPS proved to be a stronger predictor of disease risk than either step count or average heart rate on their own.

To illustrate how the DHRPS works, consider two individuals who both take 10,000 steps daily. One person has a resting heart rate of 80, which is within a healthy range, while the other has a resting heart rate of 120, indicating a higher level of heart strain.

 The first individual would have a DHRPS of 0.008, while the second would have a DHRPS of 0.012. A higher DHRPS ratio signals a higher risk of heart-related diseases, making this simple metric a useful tool for health monitoring.

The study participants were grouped based on their DHRPS ratios, with those in the highest group showing a stronger association with disease compared to those in the lower ratio groups.

The DHRPS metric was also found to be more effective than step counts or heart rates alone in identifying health risks, making it a valuable tool for both healthcare professionals and individuals looking to take control of their health.

The simplicity and low cost of the DHRPS metric make it a practical option for anyone with a smartwatch who is interested in monitoring their cardiovascular health.

As the researchers point out, this approach leverages data that people are already collecting, so it requires minimal additional effort. By doing a little bit of math, individuals can gain insight into their heart health and take steps to improve it.

As cardiovascular diseases, including diabetes and hypertension, continue to affect millions of people globally, tools like the DHRPS could offer a simple yet effective means of early detection.
